I have a couple Winboxes I could press into entertainment duty if need be. It's George Jetson without Rosie the Robot around here. You have to love those Mac-Mini's, screen sharing and iPad's. I run JRiver Media Center on the 4 Mac based sound systems I have around the house. There is the option of the Hypex DLCP and there are other 7.1 sound cards I could trick into serving as an active crossover, but there is a fan base around the nanoDIGI and Xonar that a small guy digital newbie requires. You can't buy the parts for a good passive xover for that money. I don't need to buy additional DAC's so the cost is a wash. It seems to me the most caveman friendly options are the nanoDIGI 2x8 and the Asus Xonar Essence ST. However, clearly a better solution for the Fonken and a way to ditch the plate amps on the helper woofers.) (I don't quite understand the Firewire DAC solution but seems limited to a 2-way. Dave, ever the wise voice of reason, I dug back into the nanoDigi literature. Who knew? I have read the manual for the ASUS card. Kind of scary.ĪES/EBU, LPCM, S/PDIF, it's a blinky red light, Jiminy Cricket! But that was the conceptual road block. This gibberish is just becoming sensible to me. It could, of course, be replaced by an Aurora 8 for just under $2K. A friend of his, my digital role model, employs JRiver, using ASIO into a Lynx Two B that then goes AES into a BSS FDS 366T. I have a dear old friend of over 35 years who never put a capacitor between the signal path of his transformer coupled SET amps and the Alnico compression drivers that produce a synergy and purity, an alchemy, he honors and preserves. I want to stay all digital until the signal is fully sliced and diced, ready to be amplified, once.

I would love for someone to school me and call schnikes, but that level of gear seems like wine so fine they put it in a box. I own an old ART 310 crossover and a man bitten by a snake is cautious around a coiled rope. I love the feature set of this magic box, but I don't trust that process.

Advise is welcomed and sought.ĭownloading and reading the manual of the ubiquitous Behringer Ultra-Drive Pro DCX2496 I figured out that, like the miniDSP, it is analog in and analog out. But I find Stereophile and The Absolute Sound about as fetching and reliable as pharmaceutical advertisements suffered through trying to watch the national network news. I would likely be more "enlightened" if I could stomach the audio magazines.
